Here are the highlights from the interview of Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı:

“There are teachers and students among those who have lost their lives in the heinous attack that occurred on Saturday. I want to pay my condolences to their families and the whole nation.”

Our educators and the system are highly sensitive about not only this particular attack but also incidents that we have been experiencing for the last 30-40 years.

“Studies conducted about the profiles of those who are involved in terrorist activities reveal that these people lack sensitivity about secrecy and value of life. This shows that respect to humanity should be an essential principle of education. Our educators and the system are highly sensitive about not only this particular attack but also incidents that we have been experiencing for the last 30-40 years. “

Appointments to state positions is a subject of law

“Appointments to state positions are regulated by the law. In other words, number of appointments that will be made by the Ministry is determined by the law and should be permitted by the Ministry of Finance. Last year, the Ministry of Finance allowed us to make 37 thousand appointments although the law said we would make 47 thousand appointments. In short, we have 10 thousand vacant appointments for this year. But this depends on the decision of the Ministry of Finance.”

The country needs a total of 95 thousand and 624 teachers

“We have appointed more than 2 thousand and 95 handicapped teachers. Last year, we appointed 51 thousand and 74 teachers and now the country needs a total of 95 thousand and 624 teachers. Usually, it has been claimed that there is a serious need in Eastern and Southeastern regions. But in reality, teacher occupancy rate in whole country is around 90 percent.”

70 percent of recent appointments were made to Eastern and Southeastern regions

“70 percent of recent appointments were made to East and Southeast regions. Media focused on concerns that some teachers would not go to these regions. But, only 40 teachers out of 29 thousand appointed teachers wanted to be excused from this duty. I want to thank all young teachers who displayed patriotism.”

Newly appointed teachers will be accompanied by an advisor throughout the semester

“Students that will be appointed in February will start their duty and they will begin getting a salary by March 1. These newly appointed teachers will be accompanied by an advisor throughout the semester. They will receive orientation from senior teachers according to the location of their new duty and their department. Especially teachers who will be appointed to the regions where the majority of students speak Kurdish as mother language will learn basic Kurdish.”

Cost of education varies according to the type of school

“Although, it varies according to the type of school, it costs an average of TL 3000-3500 to educate a student. When the number of students per teacher rises, cost of education also increases. When a student goes to private school, this cost has been removed from the shoulders of state. Due to this reason, we have supported 167 thousand and 563 students to enroll in private schools, last year.

This year, 1 million and 95 thousand students enrolled in private schools

This year, 1 million and 95 thousand students enrolled in private schools. Last year, this figure was 778 thousand students. We do not offer support to the families who can afford sending their children to private schools and they do not apply for such support anyway.

We consider income of the family and number of children they have when we provide support for private education. We also classified private schools according to certain standards.

112 thousands teachers gave courses during weekends

“The total number of schools in Turkey is 24 thousand and we have opened refresher courses in 22 thousand 272 of these schools. These courses are free. Last year, 112 thousands teachers gave courses during weekends.

4 million and 12 thousand students apply for refresher courses

“Last year, 2 million and 600 thousand students have attended the refresher courses which were initiated as a part of a pilot implementation. This year, 4 million and 12 thousand students apply for refresher courses.”

Refresher courses are free

“I would like to repeat one time that refresher courses provided by our Ministry are free. It is said that supplementary text books are required for these courses. We have issued a circular both at the end of previous school year and the beginning of this school year that students are not required to purchase supplementary text books.”

EIN is the largest education portal of the World

EIN is the largest education portal of the World developed by the Ministry of National Education. It includes more than 150 thousand supplementary educational material and there are more than 20.000 sample exams and tests. If you miss a class, here you have the search engine of the portal.

Videotaped courses are also uploaded to the portal. There is everything a student could need in this portal and it is free. It is open 24 hours a day. You can watch these wherever and whenever you want.

There are 295 thousand students in dormitories

“There are currently 295 thousands in dormitories. There are also scholarship students. You have the opportunity to see where your child is residing, all of his daily activities, his diet, and his health if you enter e-pension application of our ministry. We have developed a standard budget program that allows automatic calculation of basic needs of pensions.

Since now, we have distributed tablet computers to 1.5 million students and teachers

“Unlike what some people think, FATİH Project is not based on only distributing tablet computers, it includes software also. Since now, we have distributed tablet computers to 1.5 million students and teachers. Our priority is to distribute tablets to 9th graders. We shall continue to distribute 10 million and 600 thousand more tablets to students and teachers in three years’ time and majority of these tablets will be produced locally.

13 studios in 12 cities

In addition to interactive boards and computers, we have also developed e-content program. We are founding 13 studios in 12 cities where teachers will have the opportunity to video tape their lectures. Today, I met with the Minister of National Education of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. I mentioned this study. He asked us to found a studio in the TRNC. We will do this, if Allah permits and we will make such a contribution to the education community of the TRNC.

392 thousand teachers got training

392 thousand of our teachers have completed training programs based on how to use interactive boards and computers during class and if Allah permits, 175 thousands of teachers will receive similar training this year.
